The Ronald McDonald House Charities® Healthcare Within Reach Contest: Can you “Spot the Mobile?”

The Ronald McDonald House Charities® “Spot the Mobile” challenge encourages Houstonians to find the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile®, where it will be placed in some unusual, out-of-reach places for six weeks throughout Houston in order to draw attention to the dire need to bring Healthcare Within Reach for the underserved children and families of Houston and Galveston.

Making an impact

We are successful when we can reach children in their communities and this year, families will need free medical even more as the economic impacts of the COVID-19 crisis hit their households and they look to us to meet their treatment needs. By reaching children in their own communities, RMHC-GHG provided over 10,000 medical treatments during more than 6,000 patient visits with Houston-area children in 2019, and we expect that number to grow in coming months.

Through our Care Mobiles, we are providing the critical support needed to deliver free medical care to thousands of uninsured children of our community.

With our Care Mobiles currently in operation, we are uniquely positioned to flexibly provide quality care in the Houston areas most in need and address both normal medical needs and pent-up demand generated by the COVID-19 crisis. We measure our success by the life of each child served. Carlos Cardona explains:

“I went to the Care Mobile for my immunizations and local care check-up. I told them I was a 17-year-old, but they didn’t think I looked that old. Which I thought was odd, but I just assumed I wasn’t growing. Apparently, something was stunting my growth. My hormones weren’t working. They sent me to have an MRI – and they found I had a brain tumor. It was making me blind in my left eye and also stunting my growth.” Carlos has had his tumor surgically removed and completed his physical therapy to regain his strength.

According to the Children at Risk study, Growing Up in Houston 2019-2020: Assessing the Quality of Life of Our Children, “A healthy child is one who is vibrant, attending school, receiving well-visit checks, and able to manage any chronic illness. Children who are healthy are better learners, have improved educational outcomes, and can access additional future economic opportunities. Unfortunately, there are several barriers that make the path to health difficult for the most vulnerable Texas children. Children in Texas are at an increased risk of being uninsured, which can lead to poor health outcomes and higher medical expenses for families. Children lacking health insurance often go without medical care, leading them to miss school days and fall behind academically. A child’s health, whether good or bad, can have ripple effects throughout their lifetime.”

As of 2018, there are over 872,794 uninsured children in Texas. The Harris County Public Health Executive Director, Umair Shah, recently said there are over 200,000 uninsured children in Harris County alone, not including those living in our surrounding counties.

We go where children need us.

Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Greater Houston/Galveston is helping to bring healthcare within reach

With more than 1,000,000 kids, Texas currently leads the nation for the highest number of uninsured children. The situation is dire as thousands of families in Greater Houston and Galveston do not have readily-available access to quality healthcare for their children.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Houston/Galveston is determined to change that with a campaign to bring Healthcare Within Reach to underserved communities. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile program provides children and families in the most medically under-served areas of the community with quality healthcare free of charge.

We challenge Houstonians to live and breathe our city’s “Houston Strong” neighbor-to-neighbor spirit by helping us bring Healthcare Within Reach for thousands of children and families who need it most.
